At the moment I'm using Plex on my Android phone to stream to my Chromecast. The external drive with my (.mkv) movies is connected to my iMac. This setup works quite good, but I'm thinking about buying a NAS so I don't have to keep my iMac on all the time (and the currently connected drive makes a lot of noise too).
Now I have a question about transcoding. In the setup I'm using right now, the transcoding (and other heavy work) is done by my Android phone right? So I don't need to buy a NAS that is able to transcode 1080p movies. I'm happy with a NAS serving only as a file server.
Or am I wrong, and is the transcoding done on my iMac to which the drive is connected?
